Flavors and Tradition:
The Enchantment of Txakoli at Bodega Berroja

Exploring the Soul of Txakoli:
Tradition and Avant-garde at Bodega Berroja

To dive into the heart of Bodega Berroja is to embark on a journey through the very essence of our winemaking tradition. Nestled in a rural area of the Basque Country, we have embraced innovation while maintaining firm ties with our ancestral history.

In every corner of our winery, we fuse the contemporary with the traditional. Since we ventured on this journey in 1995, we have tirelessly dedicated ourselves to honoring the word “txakoli”, a Basque expression that carries innumerable meanings: land, legacy, culture and roots.

A place to enjoy, to drink, to eat and to have fun.

In Basque, wine is called Ardoa, being the fermented juice of the grape. In Bizkaia, the tradition of sharing wine and culinary delicacies has endured over time. While in Gipuzkoa the cider houses stood out, in our land, the txakolis were the epicenter of gastronomic and cultural festivities, where delight was mixed with sport, flavors and the ability to enjoy life to the fullest.

This is the essence that we defend of txakoli, a space where drinking, eating and having fun converge in a symphony of pleasures, despite the different perspectives that may arise about the fact of elaborating it at home or in a winery.

Txakoli as a Cultural Epicenter in Bizkaia

For us at Bodega Berroja, the guiding principle is clear: the grape grows, is made, is tasted and enjoyed in a single place. That is why we call ourselves Bodega Berroja Txakoli, melting in every sip the very essence of our land.

Our fortune lies in belonging to the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, where every drop produced is intrinsically linked to this destination. This uniqueness distinguishes us from other txakolis that are developed in different territories under the same roof, giving us the title of a Terroir txakoli, a wine with a singularity that differentiates it from more generalist productions.

This concept, we could say, is similar to the “chateau de Berrojas” in French terms, although we prefer not to use such a denomination, as our identity is rooted in the lands of Urdaibai.
